Pastor Maldonado’s accident-prone season continued in China today when the Lotus driver crashed in the pit entry road.

Maldonado repeated a mistake seen in the past when he ran wide at the tight left-hander and understeered off the road into the tire wall. Earlier he had an off-track moment when he appeared to be distracted while making an adjustment on the steering wheel.

Honda F1 boss Yasuhisa Arai was non-committal today when asked about plans to extend F1 engine supply beyond McLaren.

McLaren will initially have exclusive use of the new power unit when the Japanese manufacturer returns to the sport next season.

Lewis Hamilton may have been fastest on Friday in China, but the Briton was clearly far from satisfied with the setup of his Mercedes.

At one point he told the team “there’s something wrong with this car.” He’d already had suspension issues in the morning session, which saw him run only nine laps.

Surprise phone call gave Mattiacci Ferrari F1 job

Marco Mattiacci says the opportunity to take over as head of the Ferrari F1 team came out of the blue in a phone call from Luca di Montezemolo last week, some 72 hours before the news of his appointment and the departure of Stefano Domenicali was officially confirmed.

The erstwhile CEO of Ferrari North America, who met the F1 media for the first time in China today, was in New York when his boss rang.

Sebastian Vettel returned to victory lane this week, behind the wheel of the new Infiniti Q50 in a celebrity race in downtown Shanghai.

Chinese movie star Jimmy Lin, snooker player Pan Xiaoting and renowned businessman Yao Jinbo were amongst the names racing Vettel, who emerged victorious in all but one of the five races.
