2023 NCAA Championship odds: Sweet 16 favorites to win March Madness

Updated Mar. 21, 2023 12:42 p.m. ET

Two pre-tournament favorites — No. 1 seeds Kansas and Purdue — turned in their uniforms sooner than they expected.

Two No. 1 seeds remain. The first is Alabama, a school more known for its dominance on the football field than on the basketball court.

The second team, Houston, is trying to accomplish something the famous "Phi Slama Jama" teams of the mid-1980s couldn't do, which is win it all. Those 1980s-era Cougars were runners-up in 1983 and 1984 behind Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.

Is this the season the Cougars finally cut down the nets in April? The Cougars have reached the Final Four six times without winning it all, the most semifinal appearances for a team without a national title.

UCLA, Houston, Gonzaga represent record-tying 11 conferences in Sweet 16

The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament has a record-tying 11 conferences in the Sweet 16.

Alabama had a disappointing football season (by ‘Bama standards, at least). But Nate Oats’ Crimson Tide, the tournament's No. 1 overall seed, are the betting favorites at FOX Bet to win it all (+300) and sing along with Luther Vandross' "One Shining Moment." The Tide started the season at +5000.

And you can't forget about the Gonzaga Bulldogs, the small school from Spokane, Wash. This could finally be their year to win it all after playing in every NCAA tournament since 1999. The Zags were runners-up in 2021 and 2017. Gonzaga's current title odds sit at +1000.

Another team making a big move up the odds chart during the season was four-time national champion UConn. The Huskies' title odds were +8000 when this season tipped off. The team's title odds have shortened all the way to +800 as of Monday.

And don't count out Tom Izzo's Michigan State Spartans. MSU was +2800 to start the season and now has the third-longest odds (+5000) of the 16 remaining teams. But are you betting against the coach who is two wins from his ninth Final Four and four wins from his second NCAA title (2000)?
