Ole Miss gets rings to commemorate ... Peach Bowl?

Published Jun. 1, 2015 5:05 p.m. ET

Ole Miss couldn't have been happy with the way its 2014 season ended -- losing three of the last five regular-season games and then getting destroyed 42-3 by TCU in the Peach Bowl -- but that doesn't mean it wasn't a season worth celebrating overall.

And the Rebels have been rewarded handsomely for their 9-4 season, as they recently received rather lavish rings to commemorate a season in which they started 7-0, defeated top-ranked Alabama and ascended at one point to No. 3 in the country, their highest ranking in more than a half-century.

Coach Hugh Freeze tweeted out a picture of the rings over the weekend:

While it looks almost like a Super Bowl ring, it actually has "Peach Bowl" engraved at the top and bottom. According to Freeze (in a subsequent tweet), the players selected the rings as part of their gift package when the "New Year's 6" bowls were announced.

Granted, it might seem a bit odd to commemorate the couldn't-have-been-much-worse result against TCU, but as Freeze said in his tweet, the rings really are more about Ole Miss' season-long journey than its end-of-season destination. That's the program's public stance, anyway; the players might offer a different take about what gift they'd select if given the opportunity to reconsider after their Peach Bowl debacle.
