After second opinion, A's Hahn to be shut down for a month

The latest update regarding the status of Oakland Athletics right-hander Jesse Hahn came through on Friday, and it left Hahn frustrated.

After seeking a second opinion on his elbow, Hahn will be shut down from baseball activities for a month according to Joe Stiglich of CSN Bay Area. The A's already expected him to have an extended stint on the DL, and now they know the details. Having been placed on the disabled list with what was called a 'forearm strain' last week, Hahn will now be out of commission until at least August.

Considering the earliest he'd feasibly be able to return would be September, it's worth considering if Oakland - still in last place and seemingly out of the playoff picture - might just let him rest and recuperate in time to prepare for spring training.

Stiglich notes that Hahn will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection this coming Tuesday, a treatment designed to help promote better and more effective healing in his arm.

Hahn, who experienced arm issues earlier in his career, shared his feelings about this new setback with Stiglich: “It’s really frustrating. I’ve really spent these last five years trying to come back from this surgery. I actually felt like a normal pitcher this year, so it’s frustrating.”

Prior to experiencing elbow issues last month, Hahn was having a strong season for the A's, but now they'll have to wait and see if he will even be able to resume pitching this season.

In Hahn's absence, Chris Bassitt is expected to get the ball when Hahn's spot in the rotation rolls around.
