The St. Louis Cardinals added more depth at shortstop by signing Ruben Tejada to a one-year contract on Saturday.

With Jhonny Peralta expected to be sidelined for about 2-3 months after thumb surgery, Tejada gives the Cardinals another option. Jedd Gyorko and Greg Garcia also are in the mix for playing time.

Tejada, 26 was placed on waivers and released by the New York Mets earlier this week. The defending National League champions are deep at the position after signing Asdrubal Cabrera and with Wilmer Flores and prospect Matt Reynolds also available.

Last season, Tejada hit .261/.338/.350 with three homers, 23 doubles and 28 RBI in 116 games for the Mets. Prior to his release, he had spent his entire six-year major-league career with New York.
