Finally: Astros' Lowrie set for rehab stint with Double-A Corpus Christi

Shortstop Jed Lowrie has been out of action for the Houston Astros since late April after tearing a ligament in his thumb. Though his absence facilitated the debut and subsequent blazing-hot start of rookie Carlos Correa, the Astros have been patiently waiting for Lowrie's return since he went under the knife in early May. 

On Tuesday, it was announced that Lowrie will officially begin a rehab stint with Double-A Corpus Christi on Wednesday. 

When asked how long his rehab process would be, Lowrie told MLB.com's Chandler Rome that he isn't quite sure: "I need to get back in shape, see some pitches, get some at-bats. It's not going to be a day or two. I think it's going to be hard to say exactly, but that's a good starting point."

His manager, A.J. Hinch, is looking forward to getting Lowrie back in the lineup. As he said to Rome, "We'll react accordingly. We'll see how he responds both in his baseball timing and how he feels. Players that have been around the league like him, he'll know, we'll communicate with him on how his rhythm and timing is at the plate, how his defense is coming. I wouldn't expect it to be any less than a week or so."

The Astros are no doubt hoping Lowrie's able to come back swinging the bat as well as he was when he went down - was hitting .300/.432/.567 in 18 games with the Astros before suffering the injury.
