If you thought Jose Altuve and Dustin Pedroia were short . . .

On this date in 1951, the 3-foot-7, 65-pound Eddie Gaedel pinch hit for the St. Louis Browns. He wore No. 1/8.

If it sounds like a crazy gimmick, that's because it was --€“ and Browns owner (and infamous showman) Bill Veeck was behind it.

The 26-year-old Gaedel walked on four pitches, was replaced by a pinch-runner and never got another at-bat. But he did get his own baseball-reference page.
