Friedman says starting pitching a priority for Dodgers at trade deadline

Published Jun. 26, 2015 6:43 p.m. ET

The MLB trading deadline is just about a month away, and Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman spoke about the Dodgers' plans. Unsurprisingly, the priority is starting pitching. Per the Orange County Register:

“I think we’re open-minded on every front,” Friedman said. “But starting pitching depth is certainly front and center as it was last offseason, as it will be next offseason. It’s something we’re always going to be mindful of. But two guys going down (Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu) just increases that for us.”

Even before McCarthy and Ryu went down, Dodgers fans have been clamoring for and experts have been speculating about the acquisition of Phillies ace Cole Hamels. Friedman did not get into specifics about who the Dodgers have been scouting just saying vaguely:

“We’re scouting a lot of different pitchers – mid-tier guys, top-tier guys…So we’ve cast a pretty wide net.”

McCarthy and Ryu’s replacements -- Mike Bolsinger and Carlos Frias -- have filled in the rotation quite well. Frias just picked up his fifth win of the year on Thursday, and Bolsinger has a 2.95 ERA.
