Los Angeles Angels Acquire Cameron Maybin From The Tigers

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

In the first major move of the offseason, the Los Angeles Angels have picked up an outfielder to take over the everyday duties of left field.

Ladies and gentleman, the Los Angeles Angels have made a move. It was announced today via Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that the Angels have acquired Cameron Maybin from the Tigers. The Angels will take on his $9 million club option for 2017 as well.

The Angels sent over RHP Victor Alcantara in the deal as well according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.

Maybin has been in the league since 2007, he began his career with Detroit. Since then, he has bounced around the league playing for a handful of teams including the Padres, Marlins, and Braves. Now, he’ll have a home in Anaheim, and hopefully become the answer for the left field.

On the offensive side of the ball, his numbers are decent. Maybin batted in 43 runners last season for the Tigers. One question mark is he only appeared in 94 games last season.

However, he ranked third in OBP for center fielders with at least 350 at-bats, (last season) behind Dexter Fowler and Mike Trout. His batting average is a cool .315 and his OBP is .383.

This signing is a bit of a gamble. The fact that Maybin only played 94 games last season is a bit alarming. Maybin had a lingering thumb injury that sidelined him a few games in September via The Detroit Free Press.

The Angels have had plenty of injury prone players on their roster, so what’s one more? However, the upside is this guy could be a great pick-up as well. Expect for more trades and signings to happen in the coming months for the Angels.
