Mets: Jay Bruce reportedly did not want to come to New York
“Anywhere but New York” was supposedly said by Jay Bruce to the Cincinnati Reds before he was traded to the Mets
Well, that’s reassuring. I mean, he could have been talking about that other New York team, or he could have just as well been talking about both teams. The world may never know.
Let’s just pause for a second and discuss the timing of this news coming out. The NBC Sports report on this came out Sunday night at 10:19 p.m. — just minutes after Bruce hit a home run off Mat Latos to give the Mets some insurance runs for an even bigger lead.
Okay, I wanted to point out the impeccable timing, now onto the headline.
Basically, Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News mentioned that before he was traded, Bruce asked the Reds to trade him anywhere but to New York.
Oh. Well, the Mets inquired about Bruce at the end of July. Bruce was then sent to Queens on August 1st for Dilson Herrera and Max Wotell.
Hope you’re enjoying your stay so far in Flushing, Bruce! I know that Mets fans haven’t been the nicest so far but, I mean, more is just being expected and wanted of you. It is a pennant race after all.
It’s no secret that Bruce’s time spent in New York so far has been a bit uneventful and lackluster.
In 111 plate appearances with the Mets entering Sunday night’s game, Bruce was hitting just .198 with 3 homers, 8 RBIs, 4 doubles and 20 hits. He just hasn’t gotten his offense going yet — well, I guess you could argue that it slowly has started these past couple of games. Let’s just hope that this continues.
The Mets are off to face the Cincinnati Reds next. This will be Bruce’s first time returning to Cincinnati since he was traded a month ago.
It’ll be interesting to see whether this works in his favor and he performs well in his old stomping grounds, or if this will work against him as he’s facing old friends.
Hopefully Bruce’s offense picks up, and he can become the driving force behind the Mets’ bats as he has the potential to be.
