Mets Rumors: Will Jay Bruce Be Traded?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Recent New York Mets rumors have emerged about what the team will be planning on doing with outfielder Jay Bruce.

With the MLB Postseason in full swing, there have been some New York Mets rumors about their plans for the offseason. In a recent article by Jon Heyman, he notes that the Mets will to no surprise pick up the option for outfielder Jay Bruce. However, it is also noted that the Mets might look to trade him afterward.

The Mets have to pick up Jay Bruce’s $13-million option, one rival exec opined. “If they don’t want him, they could always trade him,” the exec reasoned.

The decision to possibly trade Bruce would likely come down to whether or not the Mets are able to keep Yoenis Cespedes. After the World Series is over, Cespedes will have a few days to make a big decision about his future with the Mets.

Currently, Cespedes has two years left on his contract with the Mets, but he can opt out and become a free agent. After another good season, it makes a lot of sense for Cespedes to once again become a free agent and get some more years and guaranteed money on his next contract.

If Cespedes does leave the Mets, Bruce is an excellent insurance policy for them to have on the team. Despite struggling in the second half of the season with the Mets, Bruce is a proven major league hitter and can be a force in the middle of the lineup.

However, if Cespedes does stay, the Mets are a bit crowded in their outfield. Due to Cespedes, Curtis Granderson, Juan Lagares, and young players like Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto, the Mets could certainly entertain the idea of moving Bruce.

It will be interesting to see what the Mets decide to do with Bruce, but they certainly have to pick up his option for next season. After that, whatever happens with Cespedes will likely decide Bruce’s future with the Mets.
