Mets take another hit as Asdrubal Cabrera suffers knee injury

Injuries have undermined the New York Mets’ chances of getting back to the World Series all season, and last year’s National League champs appear to have taken another hit.

Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who has played in a team-high 100 games, injured himself running between third base and home plate on a first-inning triple by Neil Walker during Sunday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

Cabrera limped across home and appeared to be in significant discomfort, grabbing his left knee. Cabrera bent over in pain some 15 feet from the Mets' dugout and was carried by teammates the rest of the way. He left the game, and Wilmer Flores moved from second base to shortstop to take his place. ESPN is reporting that he has a strained patellar tendon in his left knee, an injury he also dealt with in spring training.

The 30-year-old Cabrera was an All-Star in 2010 and 2011 with the Indians and is in his first season with the Mets. He entered Sunday’s game batting .255 with 13 home runs and 33 RBI.

New York is already dealing with serious injuries to third basemen David Wright (neck), first baseman Lucas Duda (back) and pitcher Matt Harvey (shoulder) and entered Sunday’s play at 53-50 in third place in the NL East, 6.5 games behind Washington Nationals.
