MLB Trade Rumors: Detroit Tigers deal Cameron Maybin to the Angels

Buzz around the MLB offseason began with the first trade, which sent Cameron Maybin to Los Angeles.

The MLB offseason officially got underway Thursday afternoon following a crazy World Series Game 7. According to baseball aficionado Ken Rosenthal, the Detroit Tigers dealt Cameron Maybin to the Los Angeles Angelsin order to receive a minor league pitcher. Though Maybin normally plays in centerfield, the Mike Trout routine won’t be interrupted. Rosenthal later stated that the ten-year veteran would shift to left field.

Of his 753 games played in centerfield, Maybin has averaged a .988 fielding percentage over 6,000 innings played. There’s been little inconsistency in Maybin’s fielding. By adding him to a roster with Trout and Kole Calhoun, it only solidifies the moniker of Angels in the Outfield. If you don’t know him, Kole Calhoun has been with the Angels organization since 2012. He would, however, be overshadowed by Josh Hamilton for a couple of years.

This is Maybin’s third team in three seasons. He spent one year in Atlanta, where he recorded 135 hits and 10 home runs on a .267 batting average. The following season, Maybin would get an opportunity with the Tigers. While in the Motor City, the North Carolinian had a career- best batting average (.315). Coincidentally enough, Maybin was drafted 10th overall by the Tigers in 2005.

Though he’s seen his fair share of traveling from team to team, Maybin’s best known for his years in Miami and San Diego. After he dropped out of Detroit’s system in 2007, Maybin found a new home with the Florida Marlins for the next three years. But again, Maybin would be the fourth wheel to Cody Ross, Chris Coghlan and Giancarlo Stanton.

Finally, from 2011-2014, Maybin made the journey out west to join outfielders Ryan Ludwick and Will Venable in San Diego. Maybin would unlock a little more luck with the Padres as he registered 105 RBI, along with a .246 BA and a .358 slugging percentage.
