Phillies Rumor: Andres Blanco Re-signs for One-Year

Andres Blanco will don the Phillies pinstripes for a fourth year

Philadelphia’s bench will see the return of veteran infielder Andres Blanco, who has reportedly re-signed with the team.

Comcast SportsNet Phillies insider Jim Salisbury reports that Blanco and the team have agreed to a one-year contract worth $3 million.

A corresponding move within the 40-man roster will be required to make the deal official. Journeyman pitcher Phil Klein is a likely candidate to be designated for assignment, as are pitcher Luis Garcia and outfielder Tyler Goeddel.

Klein could still return to the organization, should he be taken off the 40-man roster, but play the majority of the upcoming season in Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Blanco will be signing his fourth-consecutive one-year contract with the Phillies. The Venezuelan native has been a steady hand through the franchise’s recent turbulence. With the ability to play all four infield positions, Blanco provides great depth on a young team.

Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez also appear to have developed a good relationship with their fellow countryman. Having the 32-year-old at their side is an excellent move for the Phillies as they go through another year of rebuilding.

Playing in 90 games last season for Philadelphia, Blanco hit .253 with 48 hits, the majority of which were singles. The bat may not be the flashiest, but the veteran in a young clubhouse is just as valuable.
