Pirates' McCutchen: 'I don't define my worth in money'

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen won't hit the market for a few more years, but when he does, he's due a handsome contract – but he's not necessarily counting the days until that likely nine-figure deal comes.

In the wake of Jason Heyward being granted an eight-year, $184-million deal by the Chicago Cubs, McCutchen was asked at PirateFest what he thinks he'll be worth when he becomes a free agent in 2018.

"I don't know what I'm worth," McCutchen said, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I don't define my worth in money. We'll see what happens."

McCutchen is entering the fifth year of a six-year, $51.5-million contract. The Pirates have a team option for 2018 worth $14.75 million.

In his seven seasons, the five-tool center fielder has asserted himself as one of the best all-around outfielders in MLB, holding a .298/.388/.496 and averaging 24 home runs, 87 RBI, and 24 stolen bases per every 162 games.

Although judgment day won't come for quite some time, McCutchen expressed his desire to remain in Pittsburgh when his contract expires.

"This is still a place I do want to be," the 29-year-old Fort Meade, Fla., native said. "I love it here. If that's something that they can do, that's something they can do. I really can't answer from their end. We'll see what happens in the future."
