San Francisco Giants News: Melancon says no to WBC

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 6:51 p.m. ET

The San Francisco Giants just invested $62 million in closer Mark Melancon for the next four years and Melancon wants to pay the Giants for their investment by not participating in the World Baseball Classic.

Jon Morosi reports that Melancon cited wanting a full Spring Training with the San Francisco Giants in Arizona for not wanting to play in the international competition.

Some key pieces will be participating in the WBC, including Buster Posey and Johnny Cueto.

    Giants sign Federowicz

The Giants have agreed to a minor league deal with former Chicago Cubs catcher Tim Federowicz.

Federowicz was a seventh round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2008 amateur draft. He made his major league debut in 2011 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and played parts of four seasons with the Dodgers. He was included in the 2014 trade that sent Matt Kemp to the San Diego Padres but never played at the major league level for them. He was a member of the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs in 2016. The Giants are set at catcher with Posey, but rookie Trevor Brown was the All-Star’s primary backup. Federowicz should provide competition for Brown as the team heads into the 2017 season.
