Why Mets manager Terry Collins' seat is about to get even hotter

The Mets dropped back under .500 on Thursday after their 10-7 loss to the Giants. Time is running out for the defending National League champions, and perhaps for manager Terry Collins.

Mets GM Sandy Alderson gave Collins the dreaded vote of confidence when speaking with ESPN’s Adam Rubin prior to Thursday’s loss, saying, “There are no present plans to make any changes."

The key word there is “present.”

Collins, who has expressed his frustration with the team’s poor play, has bought himself some time because of last year’s success and because of the injuries that have hurt New York’s roster this season. Third baseman David Wright and right-hander Matt Harvey are done for the season, and first baseman Lucas Duda appears as if he will join them.

But with outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera expected to be activated from the disabled list prior to Friday’s game, the pressure will get a little more intense for Collins.

New York can forget about catching the Nationals in the NL East, thanks to an 11 ½-game deficit. But the wild card -- the Mets are 4 ½ games back there -- remains a possibility.

The Mets are 13-20 since the All-Star break, and if Collins can’t tap into the magic from 2015 -- the team went 43-30 in the second half last season -- New York might try to find someone who can.
