Bears' Trevathan needs thumb surgery, Houston reportedly has torn ACL

Published Sep. 20, 2016 6:35 p.m. ET

Jay Cutler's thumb is the talk of the sports world this week, but the Chicago Bears are dealing with bigger injuries.

Linebacker Danny Trevathan needs thumb surgery and will be sidelined indefinitely, while fellow pass rusher Lamarr Houston reportedly is done for the year with a torn ACL. Nose tackle Eddie Goldman reportedly will miss a month with a sprained ankle.

Houston, who led the Bears in sacks with eight last year, tore the ACL in his left knee in Monday night's loss to the Eagles. He tore his right ACL in 2014 while celebrating a sack.

Trevathan has 15 tackles and a sack this season; Goldman has seven tackles and half a sack; Houston has four tackles.

Cutler was knocked out of Monday's loss and is day to day with a sprained right thumb.

"It's hard for me to give timelines," coach John Fox said Tuesday. "We'll evaluate tomorrow. We've got practice tomorrow, we're on a short week already. If Jay's ready to do it, fine. If not, we'll go with Brian Hoyer."
