Detroit Lions: Three major players to start training camp on PUP

The Detroit Lions have announced that three major contributors will start training camp on the sidelines. Right tackle LaAdrian Waddle, running back Joique Bell and defensive end Jason Jones have all been put on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, according to the team's official website.

Both Waddle (knee) and Bell (knee, Achilles) had surgery during the offseason and aren't in playing shape yet. Jones, on the other hand, is being held out with an undisclosed injury. Lions senior writer Tim Twentyman doesn't expect it to be a prolonged absence for the eighth-year pro at defensive end.

As an option to replace Waddle, the Lions are hosting free agent offensive lineman Gosder Cherilus, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Cherilus, 31, is a former first-round draft pick who played his first five seasons for the Lions (2008-2012), starting 71 games at right tackle. He has spent the past two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts but was released last Sunday.

If a reunion between Cherilus and the Lions is not destined to be, second-year pro Cornelius Lucas can fill in for Waddle at right tackle.

Linebacker Stephen Tulloch (knee surgery) and cornerback Nevin Lawson (dislocated foot) were both able to avoid the PUP list. Waddle, Bell and Jones are eligible to return as soon as they can pass the team's physical.
