Eagles RB Murray forced to leave practice with hamstring injury

Published Sep. 23, 2015 2:17 p.m. ET

The Philadelphia Eagles' much-maligned running game absorbed another blow when DeMarco Murray had to leave Wednesday's practice due to a hamstring injury.

There was no word on the severity of the injury to Murray, who is off to a wretched start after signing a five-year, $42 million contract to leave the Dallas Cowboys for the Eagles.

Murray was held to 9 yards on eight carries in a season-opening loss to the Atlanta Falcons and went backward in last week's setback against his former team. Murray managed only 2 yards on 13 carries as Philadelphia's ground game was limited to 7 yards by the Cowboys.

That's hardly the production the Eagles expected from Murray, who led the NFL with 1,845 rushing yards last season and ripped off 12 100-yard games.

Murray was expected to meet with reporters Wednesday, but the media session was canceled after he was injured. Ryan Mathews, who signed a three-year contract in the offseason, would likely split time with Darren Sproles if Murray is unable to go in Sunday's game against the New York Jets.

Mathews has only four carries for 4 yards while Sproles has rushed for a team-high 46 yards to go with 11 receptions for 99 yards.
