It's official: Seahawks place Earl Thomas on Injured Reserve

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Seattle Seahawks shuffled their roster today as they worked replace All-Pro safety Earl Thomas, who is now out for the season.

You read that headline correctly. The Seattle Seahawks placed All-Pro free safety on injured reserve today with a broken leg. His season is over, and the Seahawks will have to try and move on without their best defensive player.

Earl Thomas was injured in the second quarter of the team’s blowout win over Carolina on Sunday. He collided with teammate Kam Chancellor, with Chancellor’s knee hitting Thomas squarely in the shin.

Steven Terrell who has played most of the last three games in Earl’s spot, will take over as the starter at free safety. Terrell has good speed, but lacks the physicality, instincts and experience that Earl Thomas brings to team. (Ben already broken down Terrell’s game tape vs Carolina. Check it out!)

Replacing Terrell as at the backup FS will be a familiar face. Jeron Johnson, who was Earl’s backup from 2011-2014, is on his way back to Seattle.

Johnson spent the 2015 season with Washington before being released in past offseason. He was with Kansas City for training camp, but did not make their 53 man roster.

The Seahawks also shook up their running back position once again. George Farmer was waived in order to make room for FB Marcell Reece.

Reece was a perineal Pro Bowler with Oakland for years, but fell out of favor with the team when he tested positive for PEDs last season. Reece served the 1st game of his four game suspension in Week 17 of last season, and then also missed Week 1-3 this year. When he was eligible to come off the suspension list, Oakland chose to cut him instead.

Reece is more in the mold of Michael Robinson than Will Tukuafu. He was a wide receiver with Washington in college before the Raiders converted him to fullback. He excels in the passing game, both as a pass blocker and as a receiver.
