Kirk Cousins doesn't mind 'game manager' label

Kirk Cousins understands all too well that he doesn’t bring the flash, style and sexiness that predecessor Robert Griffin III brought to the Washington Redskins’ starting quarterback position. But the 27-year-old signal-caller admitted heading into his Week 1 start against the Miami Dolphins that the fact he’s been tabbed with the dreaded “game manager” label doesn’t bother him one bit.
“I think I’m trying to just take it one day at time, one game at a time, not try to show people something, not try to impress, but just try to stay within myself and embrace the process, take it one play at a time, just find completions,” Cousins said during an interview Tuesday on D.C.’s 106.7 The Fan, as transcribed by D.C. Sports Bog. “If anything, do the boring things that hopefully can lead to wins. I think if I can be just a boring game manager who makes good decisions, protects the football, finds completions, moves the chains, I don’t have to do anything that is going to make the fans’ jaws drop. But if we’re finding ways to move the football, we’re putting points on the scoreboard and ultimately we’re putting wins up on the scoreboard, the rest will take care of itself.”
Cousins was asked why most quarterbacks hate the “game manager” label so much.
“It carries with it the stigma or assumption that that’s all they can do, and if they manage the game, protect the football, that means that they can’t make the big play, they can’t make the big throw, they can’t do the stuff that is hard to coach,” he said.
Cousins has been put in the unenviable position of picking up the pieces after the Redskins thoroughly botched its handling of the starting quarterback spot. So long as Cousins can lead the team to wins — regardless of how he does it — the fans and his teammates will without a doubt rally around him.
Either way, odds are good Cousins would prefer being tabbed with the “game manager” label than being called “Kurt” all the time.
