Kyle Long: Preseason reps at RT would have been 'pretty cool'
Chicago Bears offensive lineman Kyle Long started at right tackle for the first time in his NFL career on Sunday and struggled. His first test at the new position yielded a couple key mistakes and a 31-23 loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 1.
In retrospect, Long believes a few reps at right tackle during the preseason would have been helpful.
"I hadn’t even thought about that, but I’m sure that would have pretty cool to get out there," Long said, per Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times. "But the way it shook out, it didn’t work out that way. I’m not going to sit here and complain about it. I’m going to move forward and try to be the best player I can be and be the best teammate I can be."
Long, 26, is being a good sport about the somewhat surprising position switch. Although he had taken practice reps at tackle since the spring, the Bears kept him at guard throughout the preseason -- they had to know Week 1 was going to be an experiment.
Already a two-time Pro Bowler, Long must now work on getting comfortable with his new home along Chicago's offensive line.
