Minnesota Vikings place another offensive starter on injured reserve

The hits keep coming for the 5-0 Minnesota Vikings.

Just one day after beating the Houston Texans without four of their top starters, the Vikings are going to be without another key player on offense for the remainder of the season. Head coach Mike Zimmer announced Monday that starting right tackle Andre Smith will undergo surgery to repair a triceps injury on Tuesday. As a result, the Vikings will place Smith on injured reserve.

Smith missed Sunday’s game after suffering the injury last week. He’s not their best offensive lineman by any means, and his replacement, Jeremiah Sirles, played well Sunday. It’s still not an ideal situation for a Vikings team that’s already without Teddy Bridgewater, Adrian Peterson and Matt Kalil.

Veteran tackle Jake Long worked out for the Vikings, according to Zimmer, though no deal was reached. The Vikings are a bit beat up at the moment, but they’ll get a week off to recover as they’re on a bye in Week 6.
