Entering Monday Night Football, the Washington Redskins desperately needed a win to boost their playoff chances. A win would have tied them with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the last wild card spot in the NFC. However, the Carolina Panthers had other ideas, as they pulled off a 26-15 upset at FedEx Field.

In a battle of quarterbacks, Cam Newton came out on top. He threw for 300 passing yards and two touchdowns. His adversary Kirk Cousins threw for 316 yards, but threw a costly interception and had a costly fumble. Washington’s prime time struggles continue and their most recent loss is a huge blow to their playoff hopes.

Josh Norman, a former Panther, had a relatively quiet night, which was unexpected. Meanwhile, Carolina put forward one of their most impressive defensive efforts of the season. They held the league’s second most proficient passing attack to no passing touchdowns. It might be too little too late for the Panthers’ playoff chances, but they can build on this to finish the season strong.

Newton threw touchdowns to Ted Ginn and Mike Tolbert. Running back Jonathan Stewart added 132 yards on 25 carries.

Highlights

Three Stars

1. Cam Newton: Newton had one of his most efficient games of the season. He threw two touchdown passes and constantly made big plays on third down. Washington had no answer for Super Cam. He hasn’t looked like Super Cam much this season, but he made an appearance tonight.

2. Jonathan Stewart: Once Carolina got the lead, they turned to their running game to protect it. Jonathan Stewart played a huge role in it, getting his first 100-yard game in over a year.

3. Kurt Coleman: Carolina’s secondary has been prone to giving up big plays this season. However, on Monday Night Football, Coleman made a huge play. His interception of Cousins led Carolina to an impressive shutting down of one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks.
