Predicting Kawann Short's Future Not So Easy

Head coach Ron Rivera expects a franchise tag for the Carolina Panthers defensive tackle, Kawann Short…

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera recently appeared on ESPN’s NFL Insiders and discussed a plethora of things from free agent plans to his thoughts on the Super Bowl. One note he made that stood out was his anticipation of a franchise tag for star defensive tackle Kawann Short.

This may not come as much of a surprise to some. Short is a highly regarded tackle and will be seeking a big pay day. However, his stats did decline after a breakout in 2015. At age 28 and with only two full starting seasons, it is fair to wonder how long Short can keep up relevant production.

Others expect the Panthers will be looking to lock him up during the offseason. Short managed to play well despite a statistical drop off. While his sack numbers were down, his disruption was similar and at his position that is exactly what you want.

Tagging Short likely means that next season he will test the open market.  Short will not be tagged again, he will then be 29, and all indications are that he would have three years of full starter experience. This season may be his last chance to cash in on a long-term deal.

Fellow defensive tackle, Star Lotulelei, will be a free agent after 2017 and likely come at a smaller price tag. Vernon Butler was drafted in the first round last year but his rookie season featured injury and rotational play. The Panthers will push to get Butler more playing time this season and then decide whether or not to re-sign Lotulelei, the younger cheaper option of Short, or finally offer the big deal Short wants.

It is fair to assume that 2017 may be the last season with Short as a member of the Panthers. If he leaves, the question will be if his play will make the Panthers regret this decision and wish that they had paid him his due on a four-year deal when given the opportunity.
