Tom Coughlin on Giants-Eagles game: 'That's bad football'

The Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Giants in a mistake-filled Monday night matchup to close out Week 6.

Asked to describe what he had just seen, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was blunt and to the point.

“You can’t play like that,” Coughlin said, via Jordan Raanan of NJ.com. “That’s bad football.”

The Giants and Eagles combined for seven turnovers and 21 penalties. Philadelphia returned an Eli Manning interception for a touchdown, while New York was unable to turn any of its four takeaways into points. The Eagles won the game, 27-7.

The contest started strong for the visitors, as Manning drove the Giants down the field in eight plays to score the opening touchdown. New York wouldn’t score again. Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford threw a 32-yard touchdown to Riley Cooper after Manning’s first interception, and Nolan Carroll II returned his second 17 yards for the go-ahead score.

The Giants forced a fumble and intercepted Bradford twice in the second half, but each ensuing drive ended in a punt. New York punted on its last eight possessions (not counting a kick return as the first-half expired). Overall, the Giants gained just 167 yards after the initial touchdown drive.

New York also finished with 92 penalty yards. Among the infractions were Damontre Moore’s roughing the passer penalty, which extended Philadelphia’s first touchdown drive after the Giants had made a stop on third down.

A chance to provide some breathing room in the NFC East was lost, as both the Giants and Eagles now sport identical 3-3 records.

A night of bad football was to blame.
