WASHINGTON (AP) Jay Beagle and Nicklas Backstrom left with injuries during the Washington Capitals' 5-2 comeback win over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night.

Beagle will undergo surgery for an upper-body injury and be out for an extended period of time. He appeared to get hurt during the second period and did not return.

Backstrom saw his last action late in the second. Trotz said the center will travel with the team and could play Thursday night at the Carolina Hurricanes but did not disclose his injury.

Defenseman John Carlson missed his second straight game with an upper-body injury. Coach Barry Trotz said Carlson will sit against Carolina and that the team will ''see after that.''
