Brodeur admits he was hesitant to join Blues
Many New Jersey Devils fans were shocked last year when long-time goaltender Martin Brodeur left the organization to join the St. Louis Blues. After Brodeur retired in January, it made sense to assume he would go back to New Jersey. But Brodeur stayed in St. Louis instead where he agreed to a three-year deal to become the assistant general manager for the Blues.
Devils fans were even more stunned in July when Lou Lamoriello, one of the pillars of the Devils' organization, left New Jersey to become the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Now that the initial shockwaves from both moves subsided, Brodeur spoke to NHL.com about Lamoriello's and his departures, and Brodeur admitted it was not easy to leave New Jersey.
"[The Blues] offered me the job, and I had to think about it a little bit," Brodeur said to NHL.com. "I would have liked to go back to New Jersey, so it took some time for me to make my decision. But for me to go back there after everything that's happened in New Jersey lately, I think I made the right move."
Brodeur told NHL.com that there are so many new faces in New Jersey that the rink feels like any other place in the NHL now instead of feeling like home. The former goalie said the Devils offered him a position, but it was a non-front office role and he received a better offer from St. Louis.
But even though Brodeur decided to leave the Devils before Lamoriello jumped ship, Brodeur admitted it was odd to see Lamoriello with a different team.
"It was the Maple Leafs pin on his suit that I found weird," Brodeur told NHL.com.
