Capitals' Alzner avoids issues with shoveling, eyes record vs. Flyers

Washington Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner on Monday admitted he was surprised that his neighbors knew the significance of his next game.

Alzner told reporters that his neighbors were worried he'd hurt himself shoveling in the aftermath of the massive snowstorm, thus potentially suffering an injury that would keep him out of the Capitals' next contest. Alzner reported no issues with the snow and is in line to set the franchise record by playing in his 423rd consecutive game on Wednesday when Washington (35-8-3) hosts the Metropolitan Division-rival Philadelphia Flyers (20-17-8).

The 27-year-old Alzner was expected to break the record on Friday, but the Capitals' home contest against former coach Bruce Boudreau and the Anaheim Ducks was postponed due to the impending storm. Sunday's tilt versus the Pittsburgh Penguins met with the same fate as in upwards of 20 inches of snow buried the nation's capital.

Alzner, who is tied with center Bobby Carpenter for the team record, has scored three goals and set up 11 others in 46 games this season.

The fifth overall pick of the 2007 draft, Alzner has collected 15 tallies and 82 assists in 473 career contests - all with the Capitals.
