Capitals' Chimera still speeding along despite plenty of miles on odometer

Washington Capitals forward Jason Chimera is putting his best foot forward at the expense of others who aren't even two-thirds his age.

Competing in his 15th season, Chimera's is on pace for the best campaign of his career. The 36-year-old Chimera has collected 10 goals and as many assists in 34 games for the red-hot Capitals (26-6-2), who have won seven straight to breeze to the top of the Eastern Conference.

Via the Washington Post:

"You want to prove you’ve still got it, prove you can still play and prove you still belong in the league. It's just one of those things that if an old guy can pass a defenseman on the breakout, they got problems. You show them who’s young and who’s not."

Chimera, who is paired with Jay Beagle and Tom Wilson, scored a goal for the third straight game and added an assist in Washington's 3-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. His 10 tallies are just five shy of his total output registered during 82 games for the Capitals in the 2013-14 season and 10 short of his career high in 2011-12.

A fifth-round selection of the 1997 draft, Chimera is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He has collected 153 goals and 196 assists in 903 career contests with the Edmonton Oilers, Columbus Blue Jackets and Capitals.
