Carlson's Ironman streak snapped painfully short of Caps' record

The Washington Capitals shut out the Buffalo Sabres 2-0 on Monday night to extend their winning streak to eight games. But the same couldn’t be said for an even more impressive streak, which came to an end after more than five years.

Defenseman John Carlson was scratched from the game with a lower-body injury, ending his Ironman streak at 412 games … a mark dating back to Carlson’s first season in the league, the season before his official rookie season.

The mark is well short of the NHL record, 964 straight set by Doug Jarvis from 1975 to 1987, but it was painfully close to the Capitals franchise mark of 422, set by Bobby Carpenter from 1981 to 1986.

The club even took a moment to recognize Carpenter’s streak on Twitter.

Unfortunately, Carpenter can’t rest easy just yet. Carlson’s teammate Karl Alzner did play Monday night – and extended his consecutive-games streak to 411.
