Detroit Red Wings Waivers: Martin Frk Comes Back to Motown

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

In Red Wings waivers news, Martin Frk returned to Hockeytown today. Unlike last week, he’s not wearing a Carolina jersey.

In a weird turn of events, the Detroit Red Wings claimed right-winger, Martin Frk, the day after Carolina put him there. Drafted by the Wings in 2012, Frk has put in a lot of ice time in the ECHL and the AHL, while accumulating a lot of points. He had an impressive preseason with the Red Wings this season with three points in five games. So, if you are keeping track, he was drafted by Detroit, spent three weeks in Carolina, and now he’s back.

His numbers in two NHL games with the Hurricanes were not spectacular. He took only one shot in seventeen minutes on the ice. Frk also played one of his two games in the game in Detroit, which the Red Wings won 4-2. He went largely unnoticed in the game, playing only six and half minutes. The move probably says more about Carolina’s salary space than it does about Frk’s quality of play.

This is a pleasantly long-term focused move for the Red Wings front office. Frk is young; he’s only 23. He represents part of the future generation of Wings, provided they do not waive him or use him as bait for a trade. He has already proven he can put up points in the minor leagues, so he should show improvements with more time in the NHL.

For the time being, Frk will remain on the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins. Soon, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him wearing a Red Wings’ jersey. The bigger question: will he stay with #91? He certainly won’t be the first to wear the number in red and white.
