Giroux: Flyers need to tend to 'little details' to break out of slump

Published Nov. 13, 2015 1:00 p.m. ET

Saying that the Philadelphia Flyers have struggled to score goals this season is old hat.

After all, the Flyers (5-8-3) have tallied just 29 times, which is second only to the Anaheim Ducks (27) for the fewest in the league. Philadelphia has recorded 14 goals in its last nine games (1-6-2), and has been outshot in each of those contests.

Captain Claude Giroux received criticism following Thursday's 5-2 setback to the Washington Capitals for failing to shoot the puck on a pair of 2-on-1 rushes.

"We're aware we need to score more goals, but that doesn’t mean shooting the puck," Giroux told CSN Philly. "It's means doing the little details. How we forecheck. How we break out. Just little details. ... When we play the right way, we will have more shots."

Giroux scored his fifth goal on Thursday, tying him with fellow center Brayden Schenn for the team lead. The captain's 10 points lead the low-scoring club.

Unfortunately for Philadelphia, Jakub Voracek has yet to score a goal after enjoying a career-season in 2014-15. Fellow forward Wayne Simmonds has just two tallies while the team's traditionally strong power play is clicking at just 14.6 percent this season, good enough for a tie for 25th place in the league (with Anaheim and the Pittsburgh Penguins).
