Hurricanes' Peters wants more out of Skinner, offense

Carolina Hurricanes coach Bill Peters knows he needs more offense if the team is to contend for a postseason berth.

Peters made it clear that Jeff Skinner needs to recapture the form that made him a two-time 30-goal scorer. The 23-year-old Skinner was held to just 18 goals and 13 assists last season, down from a stellar 2013-14 campaign in which he recorded a career-best 33 tallies and 54 points.

"We need Jeff Skinner to have a bounce-back year," Peters told NHL.com. "He's an offensive guy; he's proven he can score at the NHL level. We need to get him back to being a consistent 25- to 30-goal scorer.

Captain Eric Staal led the Hurricanes with just 23 goals and 54 points, his lowest offensive numbers since his rookie campaign of 2002-03.

Carolina (30-41-11) finished last season with just 183 goals, which was fourth-worst in the league. As a result, the Hurricanes ended up in the basement of the Metropolitan Division.
