Mets' Wright, Isles' Tavares leading each other's cheering sections

New York Mets third baseman David Wright has plenty on his plate these days . . . you know, with that World Series thing and all.

Granted a rare off day last week, Wright found himself at the Barclays Center cheering on good friend and New York Islanders captain John Tavares.

"I love watching hockey in person,” Wright, the Mets captain, told the Islanders' website. "Knowing how knowledgeable and how much of a baseball fan John is, I’ve followed him and rooted for him. It's fun to come out and see the live action."

Wright and Tavares have enjoyed their fair share of headlines in the New York tabloids, as both good-looking captains oversee teams that are trying to end lengthy championships droughts. The Mets haven't won a World Series since 1986 while the New York Islanders are far removed from their four consecutive Stanley Cup titles to begin that decade.

Unfortunately for Tavares (knee) and Wright (spine), both have endured significant injuries during their careers in their quests to bring their respective teams to the Promised Land.

The pair met shortly after the Islanders selected Tavares with the first overall pick of the 2009 NHL Draft. Tavares participated in batting practice and tossed the ceremonial first pitch before a game against the New York Yankees on June 28, 2009.

While Tavares admitted that he disliked the Yankees prior to that contest, the 25-year-old Ontario native's loyalty is with the Toronto Blue Jays. Now that the Blue Jays fell to the Kansas City Royals in the American League Championship Series, Tavares has no issue supporting the Mets -- and Wright -- in their bid for glory.
