A handful of Royals now lead All-Star balloting with four days left

Seems fans of teams other than Kansas City finally woke up because the Royals' domination of the All-Star Game balloting is slipping. If the voting ended today (which it doesn't), only five Kansas City position players would be in Cincinnati on July 14.

That's down from a high of eight two weeks ago and seven last week. Of course, it would still be more starters than any other team could boast.

For now, catcher Salvador Perez, shortstop Alcides Escobar, outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon and second baseman Omar Infante (barely) lead the voting at their respective positions. Perez, who had been the top vote-getter in either league, now is second (with 11,666,785 votes) behind Toronto's Josh Donaldson (11,738,206), who surpassed Mike Moustakas (now in second place with 10,372,868 votes) at third base.

Also in second place at their positions are first baseman Eric Hosmer (2.4 million behind Detroit's Miguel Cabrera) and DH Kendrys Morales (only 200,000 behind Seattle's Nelson Cruz).

Infante's lead over Houston's Jose Altuve is just over 230,000. The only other Royal currently with a starting spot who appears to be within shouting distance of his closest pursuer is Gordon, whose lead over Detroit's Yoenis Cespedes stands at 1.4 million. Perez (a lead of more than 5 million votes), Escobar (2.6 million) and Cain (2.8 million) have comfortable leads.

Fan voting, which is conducted entirely online, continues through Thursday. The starting position players will be announced Sunday. The All-Star reserves, pitchers and Final Vote candidates will be announced July 6.
