Anderson battered as D-backs lose fifth straight

PHOENIX -- After a marathon loss the previous night, the Arizona Diamondbacks sure could have used a strong start by Chase Anderson.

They didn't get it.

Anderson couldn't make it through the fourth inning and the San Francisco Giants beat Arizona 8-4 on Saturday night, extending the Diamondbacks' losing streak to a season-worst five games.

Anderson (4-4) allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season.

"They hammered him pretty good tonight," manager Chip Hale said.

Anderson has allowed 26 runs in his last five starts.

"This point of the season, in the last three or four outings it has been some kind of slump," he said. "I don't know if it is mentally or physically, but obviously I am trying to fix it because I don't want to prolong it. "

Arizona `s skid comes after it had climbed back to .500.

"We are not playing crisp baseball," Hale said.

The win assured the Giants their 10th straight series victory in the desert. The Giants haven't won this many series in a row on the road since they took 13 straight against the Boston Beaneaters/Doves from 1903 to 1907.

"I don't have a way to explain it," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, "but I do know our guys seem to like hitting here."

Jake Peavy got his first win of the season and Buster Posey had three hits, driving in four runs in the Giants' fifth straight win.

"I like hitting here," Posey said. "It's similar to Colorado in the sense that it's a really big outfield, and the ball travels well."

Peavy (1-4), making his fifth start of the season and third after missing all of May and June with a back strain, allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings in his first win since last September.

Peavy twice got the NL's batting average and RBIs leader Paul Goldschmidt out with runners in scoring position, once on a bouncer to the pitcher and once on a strikeout.

Peavy also started San Francisco's four-run third inning with a single, rounding the base wide and having to scramble to get back to first with his first hit in two seasons.

"You normally don't see me laugh much during a game, but that was entertaining," Bochy said. "I enjoyed watching the old man change his mind and scurrying back. He looked like a cat the way he was clawing the dirt, but he found a way to get back."

Andrew Susak left after he injured his right thumb sliding into third on his triple leading off the fourth inning. X-rays were negative and it was diagnosed as a sprain. An MRI was scheduled Sunday to determine if there was any ligament damage.

Bochy estimated Susak would be out a week to 10 days and he said the team could bring up Hector Sanchez from Triple-A Sacramento to give the team a second catcher behind Posey, who had to return to the position after catching more than 200 pitches in Friday night's 6-5 12-inning win.

Singles accounted for 13 of San Francisco's 14 hits.

"Tonight's kind of who we are," Bochy said. "We're not a power-hitting club, but we're a team that needs to execute and get on base and find a way to get 'em in."

Sergio Romo pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his first save of the season.

Matt Duffy had three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Giants. Brandon Crawford had a two-run single in San Francisco's four-run third inning.

David Peralta homered and hit his third triple in the last two nights for Arizona. Cliff Pennington, whose throwing error allowed the winning run to score Friday night, hit his first home run of the season and second career pinch-hit homer.

Pennington, the last batter Peavy faced, hit a solo home run to cut the lead to 7-4 in the seventh. Posey's RBI single off Enrique Burgos boosted the lead to 8-4 in the eighth.

Giants: San Francisco sends ace Madison Bumgarner (9-5, 3.33 ERA) to the mound with the Giants seeking a sweep of the three-game series and their sixth straight win overall.

Diamondbacks: LHP Patrick Corbin (1-1, 5.40) makes his third start since coming back from Tommy John surgery.
