Blues activate Pietrangelo, recall new goalie from Wolves

ST. LOUIS -- The Blues did some roster shuffling Saturday night, bolstering their blue line and upgrading their goaltending behind Jake Allen.

The Blues activated defenseman Alex Pietrangelo from injured reserve. Pietrangelo has missed the past nine games after suffering a right knee injury Feb. 6. The defense had been pretty solid during his absence, though his return will be welcome coming off a 5-0 loss Saturday at Nashville.

Allen, who gave up four of those goals, will have a new backup Sunday at Carolina. Pheonix Copley, who gave up one goal in his NHL debut after Allen was pulled Saturday, was returned to the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League along with defenseman Jordan Schmaltz.

Allen's new backup is Anders Nilsson, who was recalled from Chicago. The Blues acquired Nilsson from Edmonton on Friday.

Nilsson, 25, has appeared in 26 games for the Oilers this season, posting a 10-12-2 record, a 3.14 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage. The 6-foot-5, 229-pounder was originally drafted by the New York Islanders in the third round (62nd overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
