Blues fill out roster by signing F Gomez to one-year contract

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Blues now have a full 23-man roster with which to open the season. Forward Scott Gomez signed a one-year contract and takes the spot occupied briefly by Patrik Berglund, who is recovering from shoulder surgery and was placed on long-term injured reserve.

Gomez, 35, logged 34 points (seven goals, 27 assists) and 23 penalty minutes in 58 regular-season games with New Jersey in 2014-15. The 5-foot-11, 198-pound forward is a 15-year NHL veteran and also played with the New York Rangers, Montreal, San Jose and Florida. He is a two-time NHL All-Star (2000, 2008) and won the 2000 Calder Trophy Award as the league's top rookie.

In 1,045 career regular-season games, Gomez has accumulated 747 points, including 180 goals and 567 assists, which ranks 11th among active skaters. In addition, the Anchorage, Alaska, native ranks sixth among active skaters with 149 career postseason games, while his 101 career playoff points (29 goals, 72 assists) are 14th among active players. Gomez is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion, winning with New Jersey in 2000 and 2003.

Gomez was originally drafted by New Jersey in the first round (27th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Berglund, 27, underwent successful surgery on his right shoulder on Aug. 25. He will be re-evaluated in four months.

Berglund tallied 27 points (12 goals, 15 assists) in 77 regular-season games with the Blues last year. He also had four points (two goals, two assists) in six 2015 postseason appearances.

The Vasteras, Sweden, native has spent his entire seven-year NHL career with the Blues after the club drafted him in the first round (25th overall) of the 2006 Entry Draft. Overall, he has accumulated 247 points (118 goals, 129 assists) and 164 penalty minutes in 513 career regular-season games, as well as 13 points (six goals, seven assists) and 10 penalty minutes in 29 career postseason games.

BLUES ANNOUNCE CAPTAINS

The also announced the club's captains for the 2015-16 season on Wednesday. David Backes will serve his fifth season as captain, while Alex Pietrangelo and Alexander Steen have been named assistant captains.
