Brewers sign Eric Sogard to 1-year contract

The Milwaukee Brewers will have some #NerdPower in their lineup again next season.

General manager David Stearns announced Thursday that the Brewers have signed infielder Eric Sogard to a one-year contract worth $2.4 million a year after bringing him in on a minor-league deal.

The 31-year-old was set to become a free agent.

“Eric brings to the team a veteran presence who possesses the ability to play multiple positions and reach base at a high rate,” Stearns said in a statement.

Sogard can earn $650,000 in performance bonuses based on games played: $150,000 each for 30, 50, 70 and 90, and $50,000 for 120.

A fan-favorite during his first season in Milwaukee, Sogard missed the 2016 season following knee surgery, opting for free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A last October by the Oakland Athletics.

He eventually landed with the Brewers, earning an invite to spring training.

Sogard spent 24 games in Triple-A before joining the Brewers, hitting .237/.393/.378 with three home runs in 94 games with the big club.

The versatile infielder -- and his catchphrase -- were a hit with Brewers fans, while his daughter Saydee became an internet celebrity after a video of the young girl crying following a Milwaukee loss caught the attention of both fans and the league.
