Cowboys' Carr to have surgery, Bryant day to day
Brandon Carr broke a bone in his right hand during practice and will undergo surgery on Monday in Dallas, according to Cowboys coach Jason Garrett.
"He was in press coverage and there was some contact when the receiver was coming off the ball. That's when it happened," Garrett said during his Saturday afternoon press conference.
The injury is going to sideline veteran cornerback for an extended period of time â he won't play in the Cowboys' preseason opener against San Diego on Thursday â but Garrett doesn't expect it to be long lasting.
"He's going to be out for a little bit here. We don't think it's serious. It's a similar injury that DeMarco Murray had last year when he played in a game four or five days later," Garrett said. "The biggest thing with this is getting the surgery done correctly, which we're confident that's going to happen, and then handling the incision and see what he's capable of doing."
Murray suffered that injury last December in Philadelphia, in the fourth quarter of the Cowboys' road win against the Eagles. He overcame the problem to play in the division-clinching win against Indianapolis one week later.
"We do anticipate him being back sooner rather than later," Garrett said of Carr.
With Carr sidelined for the near future, the Cowboys will likely lean on Byron Jones and Corey White more at the cornerback position. That duo has been splitting time between corner and safety thusfar in camp.
Elsewhere on the roster, the hamstring strain that Dez Bryant suffered on Thursday will apparently limit him this weekend, though it remains to be seen for how long.
Garrett said his All-Pro wide receiver won't practice on Saturday evening. It seems doubtful he'll be available for the team's Blue/White Scrimmage on Sunday afternoon, but Garrett didn't specify a timetable for recovery.
"Dez has a little hamstring issue that we don't think is real serious, don't anticipate him practicing today, but again we'll take that day by day," he said.
There's been plenty of speculation that Bryant tweaked the hamstring while dunking the ball over the goal post following a touchdown in the team's seven-on-seven period on Thursday. Bryant and other members of the organization said that wasn't the case, but that it came on the ensuing play.
"He says it didn't happen on that," said Tony Romo. "I told him my mom's got a great video. She was right behind the end zone. We'll take a look at that."
