Cowboys DE Jeremy Mincey reports to training camp
OXNARD, Calif. -- Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said he expects Jeremy Mincey to practice on Sunday afternoon, but that's as much detail as he was willing to provide.
"I'm not going to get into the conversation I had with Jeremy," he said. "It's good to have him here, it was a good conversation. We'll see how he's doing. He has to pass a physical, and we'll ease him into practice."
Mincey joined the Cowboys for training camp on Saturday night, ending a four-day holdout that saw him incur at least $30,000 in fines for failure to report. The brief standoff reportedly stemmed from Mincey's desire for a pay raise, though it remains to be seen if he'll get one.
"I'm not going to talk about all the specifics of all of that," Garrett said. "It's good to have Jeremy here, and I'm excited to see him out there today."
The 31-year-old veteran said Sunday morning that he had yet to meet with team officials about his contract, but that conversation is expected to take place at some point. Mincey signed a two-year, $3 million contract in the spring of 2014. After leading the Dallas defense with six sacks last year, he refrained from reporting to camp in an effort to increase his $1.5 million salary for 2015.
For his part, team executive vice president Stephen Jones said last week that the Cowboys wouldn't be speaking to Mincey until he arrived in Oxnard, Calif., for camp. Now that that has come to pass, it will be interesting to see where the negotiation progresses.
"There's a business part to the NFL that we deal with on a daily basis, and there's a football part," Garrett said. "Jeremy Mincey has done a nice job for us since he's been with us. He, like everybody, you have to establish yourself and define yourself in everything you do. We're excited to have him here at training camp."
Bringing Mincey back into the fold doesn't just give the Cowboys their leading pass rusher, but it fills out their full complement of defensive ends. Mincey is expected to help second-year defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence man the left side of the defensive line, while new acquisitions Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory work from the right side.
