Marlins slugger Stanton to have X-rays for pain in left palm

MIAMI -- Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton is dealing with a left palm injury and will undergo an X-ray Saturday.

Following his ninth-inning strikeout against Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Pedro Baez during Friday night's 7-1 loss, Stanton inspected his hand in the dugout before quickly walking into the tunnel. He reappeared prior to the game's final out.

Stanton and head athletic trainer Sean Cunningham went to the training room to check it out before speaking with the media inside the clubhouse.

"Just on a swing my bat dug into my hand a little bit," Stanton said. "Didn't feel the greatest, so just get it checked out and know for sure what's going on. I think it just kind of got worse and worse (during the game). One of my at-bats prior, but this one was the icing on the cake."

Stanton, who leads the majors with 27 home runs and 67 RBI, has appeared in all but one of Miami's 75 games.

"It's on my hand where I grip the bat, where it rotates in my hand," Stanton said. "That's where it was."

It bothered him most on swings and misses. He went hitless in four at-bats on Friday, grounding out to second and striking out swinging the next three times.

Miami, reeling on offense with just 18 runs over its past nine games, needs his production in the lineup. Stanton is also in line to start next month's All-Star Game.

When asked whether he could be out for a while, Stanton said "I don't know." He was also questioned about his level of concern.

"My level of concern will be when I know exactly what's up," Stanton said.
