Royals activate Davis from DL, return Pounders to Omaha

Their bullpen got stronger, but the Kansas City Royals also said goodbye, at least for now, to a pitcher whose father provided one of this season's most touching moments.

The Royals reinstated closer Wade Davis from the disabled list and optioned reliever Brooks Pounders to Triple-A Omaha.

Davis, a two-time All-Star selection, had been sidelined since July 5 (retroactive to July 1) with a right forearm strain. Davis, 30, is tied for fifth in the American League with 19 saves in 21 opportunities and also ranks fifth among AL relievers in ERA (1.23) and eighth in opponents' batting average (.176). Since the start of 2014, the right-hander is tied for the major league lead in wins by a reliever (18), while his ERA (1.01), opponents' average (.153) and home runs allowed per nine innings (0.16) are tops among all relief pitchers.
