Twins' Buxton placed on DL, likely out 4-6 weeks

Minnesota Twins fans couldn't wait to see Byron Buxton play for the big-league team. Now they'll have to wait a while longer to see the phenom outfielder again.

On Friday, the Twins placed the rookie outfielder on the 15-day disabled list due to a left thumb sprain suffered while attempting to steal second base in Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox.

Manager Paul Molitor told reporters in Milwaukee that Buxton is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Buxton was hitting just .189 with a double and a triple in 11 games with 15 strikeouts in 39 plate appearances and was only 1 of 3 in stolen-base attempts. However, he displayed tremendous speed and excellent defense in his brief time.

Taking Buxton's place on the roster is Danny Santana, who was the team's shortstop to begin the season but was sent to Triple-A Rochester on June 7 after posting a .218/.235/.291 slash line in 49 games in Minnesota. With the Red Wings, Santana hit .308 with six doubles and three triples in 15 games.
