The University of Michigan finished ahead of Michigan State in both the men's and women's competition at the Big Ten Track and Field Championships May 14-16, earning the final point in the Spring competition of the Pontiac Challenge Cup and forging a 3.0 to 3.0 tie in the final seasonal standings. The tie means the Wolverines retain the Cup, which they captured during the Fall season and also retained after the Winter competition ended deadlocked.

Michigan finished first overall in the women's track and field competition, while the Spartans placed fifth. In the men's event, the Wolverines finished eighth, just one spot ahead of MSU. One-half Challenge Cup point was at stake in both events to the school with the highest finish.

The Spring competition saw MSU earn a full point in the women's rowing event, plus a half-point in women's golf and men's golf. Michigan picked up a half-point in men's tennis, women's tennis, men's track & field and women's track & field. The schools each picked up a half point in softball and baseball.
By virtue of the Spring season ending in a tie, Michigan retains the Challenge Cup, which it captured during the Fall season with a 5.5 to 0.5 advantage. The Winter season also ended in a 3.0 to 3.0 tie. For a recap of all Pontiac Challenge Cup scoring, go to www.foxsports.com (keyword: Challenge Cup).

As part of its presenting sponsor status, Pontiac ensures that both schools come out winners via the Challenge Cup competition, with the schools splitting a $155,000 contribution -- $77,500 going to each school's athletic scholarship fund.

The Pontiac Challenge Cup competition resumes this Fall, with head-to-head points at stake in cross country, field hockey, football, soccer and volleyball.
