At that point, it appeared the Australian fans may be on the verge of seeing not only their home team win, but witnessing the 16-year-old Barty become the youngest Grand Slam winner since Martina Hingis won the singles title in Melbourne in 1997. But alas ...

Ultimately, Vinci (far left) and Errani recovered and dominated the remainder of the third set, winning six of the final seven games to win the decisive set 6-2.

Li Na serves during her 6-2, 6-2 semifinal victory over No. 2-ranked Maria Sharapova on Thursday. Li was the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam final when she lost to Kim Clijsters in the Aussie Open in 2011. Later that summer, Li won the French Open.

Maria Sharapova, who lost only nine games in her first five matches, comes up short in her loss to Li Na on Thursday. The semifinal started badly for the 25-year-old Sharapova, who double-faulted to lose the first two points and conceded a break in the first game.

Tennis followers already knew about up-and-coming teen Sloane Stephens. Now, the rest of the world is finding out as the 19-year-old American defeated Serena Williams 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Previously, Stephens said she had a photo of Williams up in her room when she was a child, and had long admired the Williams sisters.

It seems like Maria Sharapova exerts more energy — certainly spends more time on the court — blowing kisses than playing opponents at the Australian Open. In here latest performance, the Russian powerhouse made quick work of compatriot Ekaterina Makarova, advancing to the semifinals with a 66-minute, 6-2, 6-2 blowout.

Sharapova is seeded second in the tournament, but her dominance is right on par with that of Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka thus far. In her five matches, she has lost a total of nine games.

Makarova might as well have just stayed in this pose her entire match with Sharapova on Tuesday. Her serve was broken five times.

Spain's Nicolas Almagro grimaces during his quarterfinal match against compatriot David Ferrer on Tuesday. Almagro was cruising early, taking the first two sets 6-4 and 6-4.

Almagro needed treatment from a trainer for his injury. The Spaniard three times served for the match, but was unable to put away Ferrer in either the third or fourth sets, dropping them 5-7, 6-7 (4).

Almagro tried to cool down during the treatment, in hopes of drawing enough energy to get him one last set against Ferrer, who entered Tuesday's quarterfinal having lost 12 straight to his Davis Cup teammate.

Alas, Almagro could not do it, dropping the fifth set 6-2 to end his tournament while fourth-seeded Ferrer (pictured) advanced to the semifinals.

The look on the face of Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska says it all. The No. 4 seed entered the Australian Open unbeaten in 2013, and ran her perfect record for the year to 13-0 entering her quarterfinal match against China's Li Na on Tuesday. But the run came to a crashing halt with a 7-5, 6-3 loss.

Na was certainly pumped after making quick work of Radwanska. The No. 6 seed lost in the 2011 Aussie finals before winning the French Open that same year.

One of the more popular figures from Li Na's breakout 2011 was husband Jiang Shan, her one-time coach and now cheerleader. While she did her thing on Tuesday against Radwanska, he did his thing from the stands.

With fewer matches in the later rounds, off-day practice sessions for the remaining players draw more attention. Here, American Serena Williams, to this point practically unstoppable in Melbourne, works with coach Patrick Mouratoglou in a practice session Tuesday. Williams will face American teen upstart Sloane Stephens in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

With her Twitter antics and omnipresence at tournaments, Judy Murray, mother of Andy Murray, is the most famous tennis mom on tour. On Tuesday, she takes her seat along the sidelines, working surveillance while Andy practices.

If his shirt is any indication, he is. Murray spent Tuesday working on his game knowing that France's Jeremy Chardy awaits in the quarters.

Another one of the hottest players in Melbourne has been No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. So even though she has a quarterfinal match with Svetlana Kuznetsova looming, she doesn't look at all stressed with coach Samuel Sumyk.

This was a pretty common look on Monday for Elena Vesnina of Russia, who won only two games against the world's top-ranked player.

Sloane Stephens is all of 19 — and is a grand slam quarterfinalist for the first time in her career after Monday's thrilling 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win over Serbia's Bojana Jovanovski.

Tsonga was ready for anything — from any direction — on Monday.
