Serena Williams, right, took on Russia's Vera Zvonareva in the Wimbledon women's singles final on Saturday, July 3. It was Serena's 16th Grand Slam final and Zvonareva's first.

Serena was moving well from the start, combining offensive and defensive components to keep Zvonareva out of synch.

Zvonareva — known as a mentally volatile player — had been praised coming into the match for her level-headed demeanor and sharp play throughout the tournament.

A full house was on hand at Centre Court to watch the proceedings between Serena and Zvonareva.

A great running forehand gave Serena a key point in the first set — and reason to celebrate.

Zvonareva showed signs of the great play that had brought her to the final, but it wasn't enough against Serena.

A break at 4-3 gave Serena all the edge she needed to close out the first set, 6-3.

Zvonareva's mental focus started to leave her as Serena continued to put the pressure on. She was broken in the first game of the second set.

Serena's serve had been a huge weapon all tournament, and that trend continued in the final.

Serena looked unbeatable against Zvonareva, moving swiftly around the court throughout the match.

Zvonareva was never able to earn a break point on Serena's serve as the American cruised through the second set.

Serena improved to 13-3 in Grand Slam finals and 7-1 in finals not against her sister, Venus.

The Duke of Kent was on hand to present Serena with the championship trophy, known as the Venus Rosewater Dish.

Serena has now competed in six Wimbledon finals, more than she's been in for any of the other majors. Her four titles in London are second to her five at the Australian Open among her 13 total Slams.
