Safin set to bid farewell
by The Racing Post
Safin's game looked all over the place for much of the match in his first-round victory over Thierry Ascione but he just about edged out the French qualifier, and Del Potro would be a much more fitting opponent to play his last match against.
Had Safin been showing better he could have been given a chance, such is his excellent record in this tournament.
However, he hasn't exactly been breaking his back in his swansong season and Del Potro should be keen to start boosting his confidence with the ATP World Tour Finals just around the corner.
It's not a cut-and-dry decision whether punters should be backing Del Potro to win in two or three sets - he's 4-6 for a quick win and 7-2 for a slower one.
So given the odds and the importance of the occasion and the fact that Del Potro has recently been found wanting against Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Jurgen Melzer, it may be worth giving the second option a go.
It's amazing to see Tommy Haas playing in Paris considering the German has reportedly suffered a bout of swine flu recently. Layers were none too keen last night on issuing prices on his match with ArnaudClement today.
Qualifier Clement sailed through against Shanghai Masters semifinalist Feliciano Lopez yesterday and the diminutive Frenchman has a definite chance of making his greater fitness tell against Haas.
Rafael Nadal's confidence has taken the odd knock or two this season and the world No. 2 could find 7-1 shot Nicolas Almagro a tough opponent.
Almagro's game looked in good order against in-form Marc Chiudinelli yesterday.
